| Mr John Harris (later mayor of Falmouth) of Bristol along with brothers George and Frank built and opened St Georges Hall in Falmouth in 1912. They would soon take over the Kozey only to close it when they won the right to show films at the Polytechnic in 1922. They took over the former Theatre Royal and called it Grand Theatre. In 1925 they took over the cinema in Penryn, this closed in 1929. In the late 1920s another name starts to be associated with these buildings, Harold Robert Woodward. In the early 1930s operating companies are formed, Grand Theatre (Falmouth) Ltd and St Georges Hall (Falmouth) Ltd. The Polytechnic is leased by Grand Theatre (Falmouth) Ltd. When Union Cinemas Ltd purchase both the St Georges Hall and Grand Theatre they do not take the company names and Grand Theatre (Falmouth) Ltd continues to operate the Polytechnic until the 1950s. Harold Woodward continued to run both the St Georges Hall and Grand Theatre for Union Cinemas up to the early 1950s. Do you know more about these operators? Let me know |
