The Rex cinema opened in 1937 with Flirtation Waltz. A converted assembly room in New Street, the cinema operated part time on Wednesdays through to Saturdays. There was seating for 200, 100 in a balcony and the proscenium was 12' wide.
The cinema was operated by A G Curtis with Picturetone sound and two Kalee 7 projectors until closure in the late 1950s. It is reported that Mr Curtis lived in the projection box and had a bath set up behind the screen. Appropriately enough the cinema is now a flat.
